Whether the event is titled the ANA Inspiration or the Nabisco Dinah Shore Invitational or the Kraft Nabisco Championship, this is Dinah Shore’s tournament, and it’s a big one!

Golf may be the centerpiece but there’s more than golf this week. Upwards of 20,000 women descend on Rancho Mirage and surrounds to enjoy a full-throttle celebration of sports, music, and women’s entertainment.

Our focus is golf, and this week the game will be played on the Mission Hills Country Club’s par 72 Dinah Shore Tournament Course that can be set up to play as long as 7250 yards from the championship tees.

The 18th hole with its island green is certainly the gravitational center of the track. But as you can see from the virtual flyby, Mission Hills is a relatively flat track, a course you’ll want to walk. Wear comfortable shoes and take a broad-brimmed hat and sunscreen as well as a portable chair or stool. It wouldn’t hurt to tuck a small pair of birdwatching binoculars in your pocket, although you’ll want to avoid lugging larger pieces of equipment around. Be advised that you won’t be permitted a backpack.

You’ll learn a great deal about how the game is played, and you’ll pick up some course management and club selection tips along the way, if you get out of the grandstands, pick a group, and follow along.

Of course, come Sunday afternoon, you’ll want to pack into the grandstand surrounding the 18th green so you don’t miss the winner’s leap into Poppy’s Pond. Unless things stretch out to Monday!
