Brooke Henderson prepping for Paradise Island at DRI

Brooke Henderson’s strong DRI performance is a great warm-up for the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic!

Brooke Henderson is well out in front of the other LPGA players at the Diamond Resort Invitational going into Sunday’s final round.

Orlando didn’t supply ideal weather for golf on Saturday. With temperatures hovering in the 50s and none of that fabled Florida sunshine. Even the Canadian felt the chill. But that didn’t stop Henderson, who was playing from the tips, from firing off two birdies in three holes to start her second round. Even though right after she made the turn she doubled the 10th, Henderson recovered nicely. Picking up three more birdies on the run back to the clubhouse, she finished the day with a 67 and a total of 55 points.

That puts her in seventh place going into the final round, 18 points ahead of her closest LPGA competitor, Brittany Lincicome.

So how’s she going to play it on Sunday? Just about as she did on Saturday, she said.

I like the position I’m in. I’m just going to go out tomorrow and just have some fun and hopefully make a few more birdies.

If this is Henderson’s warm-up for next week’s Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic, everybody in the field needs to tighten up their games. She’s simply tearing up the golf course at the Diamond Resorts Invitational. What’s going to happen when she really gets down to business?

This will be Henderson’s fourth start at the Tour’s season opener and she’s never finished inside the top 20. It’s a curious pattern. Although Brooke Henderson, like everybody else, has off weeks and off rounds, her consistent inability to contend on the Paradise Island track perplexes me.

Still, before she gets to Paradise Island Henderson needs to play her way through the final Diamond Resorts Invitational round. You can’t argue with success and there’s nothing like momentum to set her up for a successful run next week at an early season victory.

You can catch the final round action at the Diamond Resorts Invitational on Golf Channel Sunday, January 14 at 1:30pm ET.
